What Is PRK?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) was the first type of laser eye surgery and has been performed safely for decades.

Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, the surface layer (the epithelium) is gently removed so the laser can reshape the cornea underneath.

How PRK Is Performed

  1. The eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops.
  2. The thin epithelial layer is removed.
  3. A computer-guided excimer laser precisely reshapes the cornea.
  4. A special contact lens is placed over the eye to protect it while the surface cells grow back, usually over 3–5 days.

What Is TransPRK?

TransPRK (Transepithelial PRK) is a more recent refinement of PRK.
