Keratoconus & Cross Linking

If your glasses keep changing and your vision still feels blurred, you might be facing more than a simple prescription issue.

Keratoconus often starts subtly, with blurry vision, glare, trouble driving at night and can leave you feeling frustrated, anxious, and unsure what to do next. But with the right diagnosis and early treatment, you can stop it in its tracks.

Mr Lane offers expert care for keratoconus, including advanced diagnostics and corneal cross-linking. A safe, effective procedure that strengthens your cornea and protects your long-term vision. This treatment does not improve your eyesight, but it is very effective at preventing keratoconus from progressing further, which helps protect your vision over time.

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition in which the clear front surface of the eye, the cornea, gradually thins and bulges into a cone-like shape.

Common symptoms of keratoconus include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Increased glare and light sensitivity
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Frequent changes in glasses prescriptions
  • Double vision in one eye

Symptoms often first appear in the late teenage years or early twenties and can progress into the fourth decade of life. In the early stages, vision can often be improved with glasses or contact lenses. However, as the condition advances, more specialised treatments may be necessary to preserve vision and maintain quality of life.

Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL)

Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is a safe, minimally invasive treatment that helps stop keratoconus from getting worse.

The goal of cross-linking is to make the cornea stronger so it keeps its shape and doesn’t continue to bulge outward.

During the procedure:

  • The thin surface layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is gently removed.
  • Special vitamin B2 eye drops (called riboflavin) are applied to soak into the cornea.
  • A controlled UV light is then shone onto the eye.

When the UV light and riboflavin work together, they create new links between the collagen fibres in the cornea. These links act like “extra support beams,” making the cornea stiffer and more stable.

This treatment does not improve vision by itself, but it is very effective at preventing keratoconus from progressing further, which helps protect vision over time.

If you have questions about whether cross-linking is right for you, Mr Lane will be happy to discuss this in detail and explain all the options.

FAQs About Keratoconus & Cross Linking

Keratoconus is diagnosed through a detailed eye examination and specialised corneal imaging. During your consultation, Mr Lane will carefully assess the shape and thickness of your cornea using advanced technology such as corneal topography or tomography. These tests detect even subtle changes in corneal curvature, allowing for early diagnosis and personalised treatment planning. Early diagnosis is key to preserving vision and preventing progression.

Corneal cross-linking is most effective when performed early in the disease, before significant corneal thinning or scarring occurs. You should consider treatment if tests show progressive keratoconus or if you’ve recently noticed frequent prescription changes, worsening vision, or increased light sensitivity. Cross-linking helps stabilise the condition, especially in younger patients, and reduces the need for more invasive procedures in the future.

Corneal cross-linking is designed to halt the progression of keratoconus rather than improve vision directly. However, by stopping further corneal distortion, it helps preserve your current level of vision and makes future vision correction — such as glasses, contact lenses, or laser treatments — more effective. Many patients report more stable and manageable vision over time after CXL.

Corneal cross-linking is a safe and well-established procedure with minimal risks when performed by an experienced consultant. You may experience mild discomfort, light sensitivity, or a gritty sensation for a few days afterwards. These symptoms are temporary and part of the normal healing process. Mr Lane will guide you through the aftercare and recovery, ensuring your eyes heal properly and comfortably.

Even if your vision seems acceptable now, delaying treatment can be risky if your keratoconus is progressing. Cross-linking works best in mild keratoconus, before major vision loss or corneal damage occurs.

Take control of keratoconus with personalised care and proven treatment that protects your sight.
